I'm not sure that there's a rigid "dress code" for kink scenes across the board. For my first introduction to the scene, in fact, I chose to go in an outfit that I would just as easily wear around normally. The outfit was a pair of black pants (I'd say they are reminiscent of the kind of things one would wear under a lolita dress, but longer and less puffy), and a tasteful black vest with a longsleeved lace shirt underneath. It wasn't jean/t-shirt street clothes, mind, but it wasn't the PVC shorts, bra, and Asian-style top that I wore to my next event. I actually got more compliments on my first outfit than my second.

That said, I think part of the prevalence of the leather/PVC outfits are that they fit with the "uniform" fetishization that many cultures have. I'd say that "naughty schoolgirl" is another overdone outfit, and in a few years I think I might have to add "Japanese concubine" to that list if it continues to grow in popularity. But, after all, what is kink about if not to get enjoyment from one's fantasies?

In the end, in addition to engaging in an activity that feels good, it is like I get to experience Halloween all over again. And Halloween is, hands down, my favourite holiday.
I suppose I could have been more specific about leather/latex scenesters and others -- as, for instance, those featured in my own post on cann-fetishists, who have definitely broken out of the leather/latex closet. Having no involvement in any BDSM scenes myself, I don't know how prevalent the leather/latex look is, so maybe I'm "misoverestimating", but it does seem to be the look in 95% or more of the BDSM stuff sold online and in sex shops (again, from my limited, "that's not the section of the site I'm particularly interested in" perspective).
