I’ve just added a whole lotta links to my blogroll. Most of these have been mouldering away in my bookmarks for a long time — some of them for well over a year, maybe over two years — and I decided it was time to get them all posted. I know that, at one time or another, I thought they all had something interesting to say. Thing is, it’s been so long since I looked at some of them that I can’t actually remember why I thought they were interesting in the first place.
So tell ya what I’m gonna do. For the next month or so, I’m going to try (and I do mean “try” — no promises from someone as flaky as me!) to write about one of these sites every day until I make it through the list. That’ll help me remember why I thought they were neat enough to bookmark, and maybe the occasional visitor will find something he really likes. In a way, it’s a kind of payback to the ‘net — I know I got a big boost some time ago when The Talking Dog added me to his (her?) Dog Run.
One last note — none of my links related to libraries, porn, or both (yes, Martha, that’s both sex and libraries) have been posted. I’ve decided that a) they really deserve a special place on my sidebar — library and porn blogs are that special! — and b) it’s too hard to decide whether a given site should go under “libraries” or “porn”, so I’ll just post them all together. I intend someday to write something interesting about library porn, so I’ve got a bunch of miscellaneous links to do something with, too. But those projects will wait; for now, I’m just gonna stick with what’s up there.
This is just too cool for words — have a look-see, and play play play!
Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) contaminates almost every square inch of our planet, and yet neither our governments nor our industries are willing to do anything about it. Take a look at the facts at DHMO.org and see for yourself!
From their FAQ:
Although the U.S. Government and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) do not classify Dihydrogen Monoxide as a toxic or carcinogenic substance (as it does with better known chemicals such as hydrochloric acid and saccharine), DHMO is a constituent of many known toxic substances, diseases and disease-causing agents, environmental hazards and can even be lethal to humans in quantities as small as a thimbleful.
Research conducted by award-winning U.S. scientist Nathan Zohner concluded that roughly 86 percent of the population supports a ban on dihydrogen monoxide. Although his results are preliminary, Zohner believes people need to pay closer attention to the information presented to them regarding Dihydrogen Monoxide. He adds that if more people knew the truth about DHMO then studies like the one he conducted would not be necessary.
A similar study conducted by U.S. researchers Patrick K. McCluskey and Matthew Kulick also found that nearly 90 percent of the citizens participating in their study were willing to sign a petition to support an outright ban on the use of Dihydrogen Monoxide in the United States.
If you’re visiting via Mozilla or Firefox, the layout looks all goofy — my apologies. I just can’t seem to get my container div to wrap my content divs. This means nothing to those of you who don’t do CSS, but those who do, you know how frustrating it is. If you use the dreaded IE or the wonderful funderful Opera browser, it looks fine, except for the little “footer” at the bottom which I need so I can tell where the footer is ending up when I make changes to the CSS.
Ain’t life a hoot?!
Since I’m blogging webservices, here’s a handy-dandy little web thingamabob that tells you your Google Pagerank. Since the dawn of humanity, one had to download and install the Google Toolbar if one wanted to know one’s Pagerank — no good for us Opera users! At last, even miscreants such as myself can access their Pagerank at an instant.
Wanna try this for yourself? Go to My Rank Online and get the code. Me, I already got it, and it looks like this:
Update: Of course, since my front page is no longer at the same web address it was before, since updating my software (didn’t even notice didja? ah, the beauties of .htaccess!), Google gives me a whopping big fat ZERO, not even a point for effort, effectively slapping an L-shaped hand against it’s forehead and taunting me, “Loser!”. My “real” pagerank (note I’m not even dignifying the taunting Google with capitalization anymore) is 4/10, which is fairly respectable given I’ve barely updated this site in a year. When it was regularly updated, it’s pagerank was 6/10, which isn’t bad for a site that’s rarely broken 100 viewers in a day.
Via Joi Ito I’ve found this neat little chat applet. Like Joi, I’ll try it out here for a bit and see if I like it.
This little button is supposed to let you know if I’m online or not.
I’ve been testing out a whole bunch of features of the new Pivot software (and mynew installation) and thought I might post a couple of pictures, see how that works. So:

That’s my 2-year old nephew playing with my Treo right after his little sister was born a couple months ago. It’s got a sorta gothic quality to it, I think.

Here’s some pretty flowers I took a picture of in a men’s room in the Hague last December.
I’ve got a zillion things I want to get to here, but I’m just super busy getting ready for fall classes (I’ve gotta write a syllabus and come up with some meaningful way to evaluate my students) and building a website for a friend of mine (a music teacher) and trying to keep up some sort of social life and trying not to dwell too much on how little of my dissertation is getting done. But I’ll be back, eventually. I hope…

‘Cause you gotta test everything…
My webhosts, Maxipointservers, recently upgraded to new servers. In order to transfer my site, I had to reupload everything to the new server, which broke Pivot. Since I was using v. 0.92, and the most recent version is v. 1.14, I realized that it would be less work (and more fun) to upgrade to the newest version rather than trying to figure out how to fix the old one.
Which, of course, raised a new problem — the templates on the new software are significantly different from the old ones. So… New template! Yay!
Now, of course, the only issue remaining is that I’ve barely had time to post anything anyway. I’m going to try to catch up a bit — there’s a lot of interesting stuff going I’ve been wanting to comment on, and I have a few weeks off before I start teaching again, so we’ll see what happens. In the meantime, there’s a bunch of wonky stuff still going on here — pages that don’t work right, etc. I’ll try to get everything whipped into shape as soon as I can.
